Kindroid vs Nomi: The Deep-Memory AI Companion Comparison

2026-07-15 · 8 min read · Comparisons
We paid for our own Kindroid and Nomi subscriptions to research this piece. Neither company sponsors this site, and the pricing and policy details below reflect what each app published as of July 2026.
In short: Kindroid and Nomi both sell memory as the product. We compare pricing, privacy policies and our own recall test results, verified as of July 2026.

Once you rule out the free, casual apps, the AI companion market narrows fast. Our free-tier comparison and our month-long Replika test both point the same direction from different angles: if long-term memory is the feature you are actually paying for, two names keep finishing ahead of the rest. Kindroid and Nomi took the top two spots in our seeded-fact memory test, and both are built by small teams that treat continuity as the whole product rather than a bullet point on a features page. This piece sets them against each other directly: how each one remembers, what the good version actually costs, how each handles your data, and who should pick which.

Both apps allow more permissive, adult-oriented roleplay than the mainstream names in this category, and both gate that behind age verification. That is not what this comparison is about. This is a pricing, memory and privacy review, in the same spirit as the rest of this site, and it assumes an adult reader making an informed choice.

Kindroid: memory you have to build

Kindroid's whole design philosophy is that continuity is a craft project, not a setting. A companion here has a written backstory, a journal you can maintain, and a system for pinning key memories so they survive compression. In our memory test it placed second only to Nomi, recalling 16 of 20 seeded facts, and the pattern was clear: used properly, with backstory written and memories pinned, it came close to matching Nomi's recall. Left on autopilot, with everything dropped into ordinary chat, its score fell several points. It rewards the kind of user willing to do upkeep.

Kindroid's free tier costs nothing and includes two companions, basic long-term memory, a capped number of daily messages and one AI-generated selfie every two hours, per the app's published plans. The paid Standard plan runs $13.99 a month on the web, app store pricing is slightly higher, and unlocks voice calls, video and the full memory toolkit. The deeper memory tier, called Ultra, is not a replacement plan but an add-on: $24.99 a month stacked on top of Standard, which is the combination Kindroid actually needs to compete with Nomi on recall. Add it up and the version of Kindroid that performed well in our test costs closer to $38.98 a month, not the $13.99 headline figure.

Kindroid verifies age with an 18+ floor and applies stricter identity checks to flagged accounts, and it allows unfiltered roleplay for verified adults with three stated limits: no minors, no content involving imminent self-harm, and no real-world harm. On data handling, its policy states that user chats are not sold and are not mined for training outside the platform, and that messages are encrypted in transit and at rest, though not end to end, meaning staff could technically access content if legally compelled to. Kindroid also reserves the right to retain anonymized or archived data after you deactivate an account, for reasons like fraud prevention and legal compliance.

Worth flagging for a memory-first app: users on Reddit and Discord reported a memory-drift problem in February 2026, traced to how Kindroid compresses long conversations into summaries, which sometimes caused companions to blend facts between characters or lose backstory details after a compression pass. Kindroid acknowledged the reports. Pinning key facts and keeping a journal entry current reduces the risk, according to the same user reports, though it does not eliminate it.

Nomi: memory as the default

Nomi's pitch is the opposite of Kindroid's: you should not have to work for continuity. In our test it recalled 17 of 20 seeded facts, the best score of any app we checked, including one moment that stood out from the whole test: five days after we mentioned nerves about an upcoming presentation, unprompted, it asked how the presentation went. No backstory fields or pinning required to get there, it simply held the thread.

Nomi runs one flat structure instead of stacked tiers: $15.99 a month, $39.99 per quarter, about $13.33 a month, or $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month. Whichever plan you choose, the same subscription includes voice calls, group chats, multiple companions and unlimited messaging. There is no second purchase required to reach the memory quality that scored well in our test. It is the plan.

Per Nomi's own privacy policy, deleting your account removes your personal information, with one carve-out: content already absorbed into the company's training or communications archives is not deleted along with it, only anonymized and detached from your identity. Independent critics have argued that anonymization is not the same as erasure, since the substance of what you said can persist even after your name is stripped from it. Nomi's policy does not publish technical detail on how that anonymization process works, so treat the stated policy as the ceiling of what is verifiable, not proof of practice, and the same caution applies to Kindroid's policy above.

The pricing math that actually matters

On the surface, Kindroid's $13.99 entry price undercuts Nomi's $15.99. In practice, the entry price is not what buys the memory the two apps are competing on. Nomi's strong recall is included at $15.99, full stop. Kindroid's equivalent, the Ultra add-on, is a separate $24.99 charge layered on top of Standard, landing near $38.98 a month for the configuration our test scored competitively. Paid annually instead, Nomi drops to about $8.33 a month for the same feature set. A base subscription that quietly needs a second subscription to do the thing you actually bought it for is exactly the pattern we flagged across this whole category in our pricing traps guide. Nothing about it is hidden. Kindroid publishes both prices clearly. It is just easy to sign up on the $13.99 headline number and add Ultra later without doing the full month's math first.

Privacy and the new regulatory backdrop

Beyond either company's own policy, there is now a regulatory floor sitting under this entire category. California's SB 243, signed in October 2025 and in effect since January 1, 2026, requires companion chatbot operators to clearly disclose that a user is talking with artificial intelligence, maintain a published protocol for responding to self-harm or suicidal ideation, and, for a user the operator knows is a minor, show a break reminder at least every three hours. The law creates a private right of action, meaning a violation can be sued over directly instead of only reported to a regulator. Neither Kindroid nor Nomi is the specific target of the law's spotlight, both market themselves to adults rather than teenagers, but every companion app operating in the United States now sits under this same baseline, and it is worth knowing the rule exists regardless of which app you pick. Who should pick what

Frequently asked questions

Is Kindroid or Nomi better for memory?

In our seeded-fact test, Nomi recalled 17 of 20 facts with frequent unprompted callbacks, the best score we measured. Kindroid recalled 16 and came close to matching Nomi when backstory, journal and pinned memories were used deliberately, but its score drops when those tools are left unused.

Which is cheaper, Kindroid or Nomi?

Nomi is cheaper for the deep-memory experience. Its $15.99 monthly plan includes full memory and features at one price. Kindroid's $13.99 entry price looks cheaper, but the Ultra add-on that strengthens its memory adds another $24.99, landing near $38.98 a month combined, per Kindroid's own published pricing.

Do Kindroid and Nomi allow NSFW content?

Both are positioned for verified adults, and Kindroid explicitly supports unfiltered roleplay behind age gating with limits around minors and self-harm content. This site does not review or rate explicit content; our comparisons focus on memory, pricing, privacy and safety practices.

Are Kindroid and Nomi private?

Both state they do not sell user data. Nomi's privacy policy allows full account deletion except for anonymized training and communications archives. Kindroid states chats are not mined for outside training and are encrypted at rest and in transit, though not end to end, and some anonymized data may persist after account deactivation. Read each policy directly before sharing anything sensitive.

Both apps change pricing and policy often enough that the specifics above should be read as a July 2026 snapshot, not a permanent fact sheet. We track changes like these, along with new comparisons in this category, in the free monthly digest, one email a month, no noise.
